The winner of the Michigan Film Awards for the Best Animated Film award at the Uptown Film Festival went to Heart-Shaped Man an animation by Detroit local, Kristen Miller.
Kristen created the video in collaboration with musician Michael Wainwright and is the latest music video produced by Tears For Fears front-man Roland Orzabal.

The Toon Boom Animation connection with this production is that Heart Shaped Man was created with Toon Boom Studio, as Kristen says, “…most of it was created in Toon Boom Studio 4.5, with a little bit of Flash for some tweens, and After Effects for editing the scenes together. I got the gig by talking to Michael Wainright during the 2010 tour of Tears For Fears. Roland wrote this song for him while on the tour, and then Michael recorded it and wanted an animation created for the song. Roland had the final say in all designs – giving him title of producer I guess. But I had a lot of free reign…. The major art direction influence was Yellow Submarine, which I think has great timing for a resurgence in graphic arts culture.”
About the Uptown Film Festival – The festival now in its second year, takes place over three days and showcases the work of local talent in Michigan. This year there were 120 films submitted, from these some 60 shorts and features were chosen for further consideration.
